SUPERINTENDENT SELECTION - MEDIA RELEASE - MAY 1, 2013
The Board of Education and two interview committees met with the four finalists on Saturday, April 27, for the day long interview process. Spokesmen for the interview committees shared the strengths and concerns for each candidate, but ultimately, responsibility for the decision rests with the Board of Education to employ their one employee, the Superintendent of Schools. Just minutes prior to the beginning of the special meeting Tuesday evening, the Board received word that one candidate, Mathew Neal of Edgewater, Colorado, had withdrawn his application after accepting a position in Rock Springs, Wyoming, leaving three candidates for the Board’s consideration.
Eric Windom, president of the RE-1 Valley Board of Education stated, “The Board has made this decision after a great deal of thought and consideration for what is best for the students and staff in our District.”
SAFETY TIPS FOR TRAVELING TO AND FROM SCHOOL
-Children should travel in groups
-Parents should choose the safest route for their children to travel - pay attention to appropriate lighting, pedestrian paths, and safe places to ask for help
-Parents should pick out safe places for their children to ask for help, like stores and friends' homes
-Parents should review the rules of walking and biking to school, including observing street signs, using crosswalks and looking both ways before crossing the street
-Children should not talk to strangers or get into cars with strangers
-Children should report any suspicious behavior or any behavior that makes them uncomfortable to an adult as soon as possible.
RECORDINGS OF BOARD MEETINGS
Colorado law requires Boards of Education to record meetings where a vote is taken and to maintain those records for a period of time. Patrons have been able to request a copy of current recordings from the Superintendent's office. It recently came to light that there is some public interest in these recordings of Board meetings where action and votes are taken. There are no recordings of workshops. Recordings for meetings where votes have been taken for the 2013 calendar year are now available under the "School Board" link above. When clicking on "School Board" the choice of Upcoming Board Agenda will be displayed as a link. Click on that link and go to the bottom of the webpage. Under the heading of "Department Links" one will find the Board meeting recordings for 2013 calendar year.
ENDORSED DIPLOMA
The RE-1 Valley School District has discussed the topic of the Endorsed Diploma for the last two years. Recently at a community meeting on this topic, Emmy Glancy, Academic Policy Officer Department of Higher Education shared information from the Colorado Endorsed Diploma Work Group. She answered questions about the benefits for student graduating from Colorado high schools as they pursue post secondary education opportunities in Colorado. On Tuesday, February 19, the Board of Education voted to "table the discussion of Endorsed Diploma until a later date."
